When We Need Certainty, We Have an Anchor for the Soul

Updated: Nov 14, 2021

The wild waves of motherhood have tossed me around for twelve years.

Problems have come and gone like the rising and falling tide.

Sometimes I see them surging towards me. Other times I'm completely blindsided.

We've been hit with infections and influenza and croup and Covid. We've had pneumonia and low blood pressure and allergies and amblyopia. There's been disease and dental issues and removed hair and rashes. We've seen stomach issues and cysts and surgeries and stitches.

But I know these issues are just ripples compared to the tsunami of concerns so many of you face.

The waves of motherhood can hurl us around with extraordinary force. They can cast us into anxiety. They can sling us into fear. They can heave us into the deep and scary unknown.

But Jesus.

He is the anchor for our soul. He is our security.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19).

He is our rock. He is our stronghold.

"He only is my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken” (Psalms 62:2).

We don't have to be shaken. We don't have to be moved.

Because God is immovable and unshakeable. He is faithful and good and true.

There are always going to be unknowns. There will be hardship, trials, suffering, pain. There will be moments that surprise us or even when we are knocked completely flat on our face.

But no matter how large the looming wave, we can always hold tight to Christ.

We don‘t have to fear the uncertainty.

Because God’s faithfulness and goodness is certain.

I won’t pretend to fully understand the strength of the waves you are facing, but I will tell you about the strength of my God and His ability to hold you steady, no matter the size of the wave.

He will be with us.

He will comfort us.

He will strengthen us.

He will help us.

He will be the anchor that holds us through the storm.

So cling to Him.

Cling to Him in unrelenting worship.

Cling to Him in desperate prayer.

Cling to Him and the transformative truth of His Word.

Cling to Jesus.

Jesus Christ is the only thing I have to hold on to when motherhood and life feel out of control.

Thankfully, He is more than enough.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging" (Psalms 46: 1-3).
